For the 20th year running, the Asian Television Awards (ATA) paired up in conjunction to the Singapore Media Festival this year, coming together to credit and acknowledge the hard work and contributions that have been made in the television industry.

On December 2, the Gala Dinner saw Singapore’s local broadcasting channel MediaCorp clinch three awards, namely for Best Social Awareness Programme, Best Documentary Programme – On-Off/Special and Best Theme Song.

Beginning with the red carpet, which saw local celebrities and international artistes alike gracing the limelight, the awards ceremony began proper as the hosts introduced the guests and all in presence to the event. For two whole hours, everyone was treated to snippets of the works of the nominees, and the intermissions saw K-pop girl band Secret, performing some of their hits. Popular Indonesian singer, Anggun, also made her debut at this event.

Bringing together all of Asia’s television best, it was a sight to behold as we got a glimpse of some of the works from overseas which we may not have heard of till today. Allowing us a sense of how broad the television industry is, it also created a sense of intrigue, as we hoped to get a chance to watch all the nominated entries, and to understand their concept and their point of view.

Despite the long list of awards to be given out for the night, time strangely went by quickly, and as the night drew to a close, the atmosphere was one of cheerfulness, as winners and those who were nominated but did not win mingled freely together, congratulating one another. It is definitely a night to be remembered, as we felt there were no losers – only winners, be they getting the award, or not.
