The first ever PDJ Street Battle DJ competition came to a spectacular conclusion this Saturday, as semi-finalists faced off outside Orchard Cineleisure. On display was a huge amount of young talent, as well as the PDJ and Bose sound systems with which the contestants mixed tracks.

The event was a collaboration between Atlas Sound & Vision, which brought the PDJ to Singapore, and Temasek Polytechnic’s (TP) School of Business. Many of the TP students involved were running a full-scale event for the very first time.

Campus spoke to two of the Street Battle judges, DJ Foxxxy and DJ Maverick, who told us that they were looking out for contestants who could use the PDJ’s unique capabilities to their full potential, and that’s exactly what the two finalists, DJ Shah and DJ Swave, did.

DJ Shah and DJ Swave, who have both been DJ-ing for a few years and were really excited to be performing for Orchard Road’s crowds, played three brilliant sets in the competition’s finals, mixing tracks by artists as varied as Pitbull and Queen.

Today’s programme of DJ-battling on the PDJ was interspersed with performances by local acts Zsa & Shane, Urban Terrain Groovers, MC Nara, Zul Mystroe and the Crazy 88, who not only attracted the attention of teenagers hanging out at Cineleisure, but also drew the attention of families and tourists who were passing by.

At the end of the competition, DJ Shah was declared the grand winner, DJ Tia-ra the People’s Choice winner (voted for by the public on soundfyr.com) and DJ Swave the first runner-up. All three walk away with DJ equipment and cash prizes.

The PDJ fun’s not over, yet – show up at Cineleisure tomorrow morning, and you might be able to join a free PDJ workshop! Slots are limited, so be sure to turn up early.
