ICN 2020 - Nilanka @ Drama Centre Theatre, National Library Building Level 3
A retelling of the Batak folklore ‘Dayang Bandir and Sandean Raja’, Nilanka chronicles the characters’ intertwined journey in fighting for their own purpose. When a decision goes wrong, one step could change the course of their lives – forever.
The musical revolves around the journey of a crown prince who receives guidance on how to be a great king from a tender-hearted uncle and a loving sister. He is often scrutinized by the people, who desires a more confrontational leader. As tragedies befall upon him, will he be able to fight for everything and be the king he ought to be?

The musical will show you the beauty of culture of Batak, an ethnic group indigenous to North Sumatra, while presenting the themes of conformity and identity. Inspired by a Batak folklore ‘Dayang Bandir and Sandean Raja’, we will explore the issues of societal pressures and norms.
