Salt Bae and Trash Dove: Know Your Trends

If there’s one thing you can learn about the big interweb, it’s that silly things tend to trend. It can be anything from a dance (think Gangnam Style) or a cute kid or a trash talker, #howbowdah ?

Salt Bae

This year, it’s #saltbae – referring to a specific Turkish chef with a goatee and sunnies who’s gone viral due to a particular video which ended with this:

Don’t be confused – the ‘bae’ doesn’t mean that he’s a salty lover. The ‘bae’ refers to the Turkish word ‘bey’, meaning “gentleman” or “chief”; so in actuality, Salt Bae simply means Salt Chief, aka Mr. Nusret Gokce.

Today, he’s known as the flamboyant salt spreader with a signature ‘cobra’ move – a simple gesture that has earned him an internet meme stardom for sexing up sodium chloride. How does he do it? Well, according to Mr. Gokce himself, “the angle is important. Also, it’s important to have muscle.”

He wasn’t kidding about the muscle part

There you have it – the secret to spreading salt is by having muscles. That’s probably why we’ve all been doing it wrong all along.

Trash Dove

If you’re on Facebook enough, you’ll notice a peculiar purple bird headbanging on many Comment threads. Trash Dove – as it’s known – is everywhere.

By now you probably are already using this Facebook sticker set, which is made by artist Syd Weiler. Released late last month, there’s a Trash Dove for every situation: detective Trash Dove, bread enthusiast Trash Dove, business Trash Dove, etc, but the most commonly used is the headbanging version:

Trash Dove exploded in popularity after it was featured alongside a dancing cat on a Thai Facebook page with millions of followers. It’s pretty funny in a nonsensical way, but because you had to watch it:

In a world where people have more time to do stupid things, someone actually merged #saltbae and Trash Dove (it’s only a matter of time).
