Cheat Sheet: Gen Z’s Guide to 80s Rock (with playlist) | campus.sg

What does your Spotify playlist look like? If you’ve got tons of EDM or Kpop, you’d be forgiven for being just like any other Gen Z. However, if you’re experimental with your music, and want to hear other genres – or simply want to know what the 80s was all about – then you’ve got to get yourself acquainted with glam metal, aka the long-hair rock of the 80s.

What is rock?

The sound of hard rock really defined the 80s – a time when big hair, tight pants, and electric guitars ruled. Bands and artists pushed the boundaries of sound, incorporating synthesisers and electronic elements alongside traditional guitar-driven rock.

You may know of bands like Guns n’ Roses or Aerosmith, but other bands that should be on your radar include Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Motley Crüe, Warrant, Cinderella, Poison, and so many more.

The sound that defined the genre is one that may not be familiar today – there is no EDM or dance moves, it’s simply good ol’ showmanship with the guitar and rip roaring vocals.

The decade also witnessed the rise of subgenres like glam metal, with bands like Motley Crue and Poison captivating audiences with their flashy aesthetics and high-energy performances. From the arena-filling stadium rock to the underground punk scene, the 80s were a time of innovation and excitement, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of rock music for years to come.
