With the successes of book-to-screen titles like GoT and Harry Potter, producers are always on the lookout for the next big title. If you loved the vibe of these fantasy novels, then you’ll have to read up on these upcoming titles that will be translated to the big screen very soon.

Watchmen

Fans of Alan Moore’s 1986 comic book series Watchmen will be glad to hear that the title will be adapted by Zack Snyder. Moore’s work redefined the idea of the superhero—but the series will not be a straight adaptation of the comic. Watchmen depicts an alternate history where superheroes emerged in the 1940s and 1960s, and their presence changed history to the point where it’s headed to WWIII with the Soviet Union.

His Dark Materials

Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials is an epic fantasy trilogy with elements that include witches and armoured polar bears; the trilogy also alludes to concepts from physics, philosophy and theology. If the polar bear looks familiar, it’s because there was a film adaptation of Northern Lights (aka The Golden Compass) in 2007.

The Witcher

The Witcher, a fantasy series written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, revolves around the eponymous “witcher”, Geralt of Rivia. “Witchers” are beast hunters with supernatural abilities to battle wild beasts and monsters – the title has been adapted into a popular video game and film, before being snatched up by Netflix for 8 episodes. The Witcher will star Henry Cavill as Geralt.

The Kingkiller Chronicle

Patrick Rothfuss’s Kingkiller Chronicle fantasy series is getting a TV show and movie series. While the films will cover the book series, the TV show will be a prequel to the book trilogy, following two traveling musicians. The series is a grand fantasy series set in a world that is full of culture, legend, and adventure, following an innkeeper named Kvothe, who was once a legendary hero.

The Sandman

Based on Neil Gaiman’s hugely popular graphic novel series, The Sandman revolves around Morpheus, the living embodiment of dreams, who came into being when the first lifeforms began dreaming; he draws strength from dreams and has the ability to shape them to his will. Morpheus learns over the course of the series that even a being as ancient and powerful as he must learn how to change or face certain doom. It’s touted to be Netflix’s most expensive production yet.
