The Durian Run – All Slots Snapped Up

With all the crazy themed runs that we’ve seen popping up across Singapore, we’d like to think we’ve seen them all. We’ve got runs with zombies, with anime characters, DJs, and the like. However, this time, we’ll be seeing something more ‘local’ – pair up Singapore’s favourite fruit and a 5km run, and you get the “Run For Good Durian Run”.

And no, this isn’t a joke. And, all slots have already been snapped up.

Here’s the rundown:
It’s a 5km run.
You do it for a good cause.
You run with a durian in your hand.

Yes, participants will have to figure out how best to carry, lug or hug their potentially lethal fruits throughout the run. This will either look ridiculous or… well, painful.

If you’re game, all you have to do on race day is show up by 7.45am to collect your durian (aka running buddy) at 8am for the race.

This quirky event is actually organised by the Central Singapore CDC and the Ang Mo Kio-Hougang CCC. Organisers invited participants to “be creative” about lugging the spiky fruits, and suggested using a backpack, plastic bag or gloves.

The entry fee is $15, and yes, you’ll get to keep your durian running buddy. In addition to that, you’ll also – bizarrely – receive a coconut after you cross the finish line.

The run takes place on July 23 in Hougang. If you’re game, enter here; your contribution will go towards the Ang Mo Kio-Hougang CCC’s Community Development and Welfare Fund.
We wonder why no one’s ever thought of that before?
