22 August 2016 – Sir Nils Olav (yes, the penguin) inspects the poker faces of the King of Norway’s Guard at Edinburgh Zoo. Part of a longstanding tradition, the first Nils Olav was adopted in 1972 by Major Nils Egelien and surnamed after the then-King Olav of Norway. The Norwegian Guard’s mascot and his two successors have been steadily promoted from lance-corporal for outstanding service and good conduct, receiving a bronze statue in 2005, a knighthood in 2008, and a promotion to Brigadier this year.
