SIXX – Singapore’s most recognised local hip-hop band describes their music to be a “constantly evolving sound” and with their recent gig held in Cannes, Kevin and Aarika share their struggles and successes.

When asked where they would see the band in the future, local band SIXX hopes to keep creating music for old fans and new ones.

“Like any musician, we want to tour internationally, be a household name in Singapore,” says rapper, Kevin Lester.

Lead vocalist Aarika Lee adds, “Definitely to still be around and be making new music that’s still relevant to the new crowd or even to our old fans that we’re still reaching out, to keep creating.”

SIXX, started by Kevin around 2007, has changed over the years, from the size of the band to their constantly evolving sound. “It’s kind of hard to describe the sound of the band. Things change and we have so many influences that come in from different base,” says Kevin.

“We try to make music that is accessible so people can relate to.” says Aarika. “Even if you’re a rock fan, or an indie fan, a hip-hop fan, there’s some element in our music that you can relate to so you can identify with us.”

Dubbed as one of the best hip-hop bands in Singapore, the band first started out facing obstacles. From getting told that they were not going to get shows due to the size of the band, to hearing that nobody understood their genre, the band stayed true to themselves. “I guess we met a lot of obstacles but we stuck our grounds because we felt we can do it. It’s going to be different but a change is always good so we wanted to see where it would take us and it has gotten us this far.”

“It’s quite a simple idea really,” says Kevin. “Just to bring hip-hop into all these small little venues. To play at places like Timbre and all.” And SIXX has certainly seen themselves evolved over the years, as they soon performed internationally, from KL to France.

SIXX is also the endorser for PSB new headsets called the M4U 2 (Music For You) Active Noise Cancelling Headphones. These headphones have been a part in the recording of their album.  The headphones not only give users a better experience when listening to music, but gives clarity as well for vocalists.

“I sort of bring it around when I let other people preview my tracks,” says Kevin.
