The Art of Growing Up – Two Upcoming Film Adaptations

With October round the corner, keep your eyes peeled for two coming-of-age films delving into the universal experience of growing pains, one through comedy, the next with drama.

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life

Release date: 6 October

What happens when you mix a talented and slightly rebellious artist named Rafe Khatchadorian (Griffin Gluck) with an uptight school culture that’s in awe of the rulebook? Chaos and comedy, that’s what. Offended by his new school’s prison-like restrictions (NO TALKING! NO LAUGHING!), Rafe and his best friend Leo (Thomas Barbusca) embark on an ambitious plan to break every rule in the school’s Code of Conduct and expose the tyrannical Principal Dwight (Andy Daly). When the tyrant fights back however, things get interesting and madness ensues. Based on the #1 New York Times Bestseller by James Patterson, the film features playful animation that recalls energetic illustrations from the book, and tackles the theme of teenage rebellion through fun and panache.

A Monster Calls

Release date: 20 October

Conor O’Malley (Lewis MacDougall) is a young boy longing for guidance. His mother (Felicity Jones) is dying, while his father (Toby Kebbell) resides thousands of miles away in another country. Living with his distant grandmother (Sigourney Weaver) and bullied at school, he unwittingly summons a monstrous giant (voiced and animated in performance-capture by Liam Neeson) from an ancient yew tree who understands and leads him through his struggles. Arriving every night, the leviathan tells Conor stories he has to imagine, at the end of which Conor must tell his own story in return. Directed by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible, The Orphanage), and based on the Carnegie award-winning book by Patrick Ness, A Monster Calls promises awe-inspiring visuals and powerful drama.
