Pete Murray, Australian singer-songwriter, will be making his way to Singapore to perform his first concert on 17 May at Wave house, Sentosa. Supporting his act is local indie band, the Sam Willows. Here’s what Pete has to share about his life, music career and plans for the future:

1. Where do you usually draw inspiration from when you’re writing songs and do you have a particular process you abide by when writing songs?

My inspiration is drawn from everyday life. I don’t only write about my life but a lot of times I write about what I see other people going through. In some cases it’s easier to write about other people. When it comes to songwriting I like to sit in a bathroom because it sounds good in there and there are less distractions. In most cases I write the music and melody first then I write the lyrics.

2. What is the story behind your debut album – Feeler?

Once Feeler was recorded I thought it was going to flop. I fell into this post album blues and I didn’t like anything about it. I definitely couldn’t hear any potential in it. I was surprised when the album took off. The word of mouth on this album was so big and then radio started playing it and things just got bigger. Everyone was talking about it and cafes were playing it. I was pretty stunned on how big it became. People are still talking about this album 10 years down the track so I guess I did something right.

3. What is the biggest obstacle you had to overcome in order to get where you are right now?

People saying NO to you. You have to be persistent to be successful in the music industry. There will always be a lot of people who won’t see your potential and they are the walls that you face. You won’t get gigs, interviews, TV spots, songs on radio etc…..but you have to keep your head up and keep believing in yourself and moving forward.

4. Tell us something about you most fans don’t know?

I can cook a pretty mean chicken and mushroom risotto.

5. Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

I still want to be playing shows around the world and be known as one of the best live acts to come out of Australia.
