An Unforgettable Experience

After 15 years, Richard Marx returned to Singapore and performed at the President’s Star Charity just last Sunday; which you probably already saw on television. What not many people know of, however, was his private showcase the very next day.

Marx, the only son of a studio singer and a jingle writer, started his career as a background singer for many famous artists in Los Angeles like Madonna, Whitney Houston and Luther Vandross after Lionel Richie acknowledged his tape and got him to come to LA.

Having Elvis Presley as his biggest musical influence, Marx has several milestones that he has achieved in his long running musical career – ranging from being the first solo artist to have his first seven singles hit the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart to winning the Grammy’s for Dance With My Father with Vandross. His latest chartbuster Long Hot Summer with Keith Urban, added a new feather to his heart of having written or co-written a successful song in all the past four decades.

A quote from Marx himself about the showcase says, “It’ll be like I had everyone come over to my house and we’re just sitting there, talking.”

However, the experience proved to be quite the contrary. The private showcase took place at Neverland II, located in St James Powerstation and was packed with up to two hundred people in this free-standing show with barely any room to move.

Singing the evergreen songs like Hazard and Now & Forever sending chills throughout the crowd, his voice stayed so crisp and strong despite going through decades of his singing career.

In the end, showcase lasted a mere hour, but did not leave a bitter taste in the tongue at all. How could it, he ended the showcase with his most famous, Right Here Waiting beautifully accompanied by the sweet notes of a piano.

A Richard Marx, as he mentioned during the showcase, is synonymous with soft ballad like musical pieces with a couple of rock elements in them and not to mention, the soulful lyrics which will, no doubt, strike a chord in your heart. Just like it did for his wife of 23 years, Cynthia Rhodes!

With Stories To Tell, he tells the musical story of his life by presenting a compilation of his acoustic song renditions bringing out in him the adult contemporary songwriter, the very successful record producer and the uniquely spectacular singer.
